Setting the Standard

Should a Christian be different?
People say: "I like to go with the group" and "He's weird, he does not mix"

The Bible says: "Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world - the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has done - comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever."
(1 John 2:15-17 NIV)

Sometimes it's all too easy to go along with the crowd. No one wants to risk losing respect from others or be humiliated for the things they say or do; no one wants to be seen as 'different'. Often, the reason people start smoking, taking drugs, binge drinking and sleeping around is simply because it's easier than saying 'no thanks'; it's less risky and less embarrassing than having to stand up for their beliefs.

Let your light shine!

Precious and unique ...
"Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don't be afraid: you are worth more than many sparrows."
Matthew 10:29-31

The reason that God doesn't want us to simply 'conform to the pattern of this world' is because He cares about our wellbeing and everyday happiness. He loves us and ultimately wants the best for us; he doesn't want us to do things which only give us a short-lived high and then make us feel low afterwards. So often the things that we feel pressured to do, like having loveless sex for example, may feel good at the time, but in the long-term they make us feel ashamed or even worthless. But we are not at all worthless to God. We are precious and unique and this is why the Bible tells us to dare to be different.

We have to look to Jesus as our role model. Jesus was radical; he challenged the norm and gave people a fresh outlook on life. He was different in the most positive and beautiful way. We need to renew our minds and perspectives on life just like Jesus. Are we just going along with the crowd or are we being the people that God has made us to be: light, bright and beautiful: "Children of light."
